Many people complain that there is nothing to do in Newberry County, but on Tuesday, July 31 the public is being asked to come out to help welcome a developer to the area.

Joe Trainor, who owns Stokes-Trainor and is active in working with economic development in the county, is working with a developer, who has purchased the old shopping center behind CVS and Hardees.

The developer hopes to turn the old, somewhat vacant shopping center into a multiplex movie theater, a bowling ally and shopping center.

The Hilton Head developer, who has not been named, has purchased the property and is working on the design for the new facility.

Trainor says the last drawing he has seen will have up to six theaters.

He adds that this will provide a much needed recreation outlet for the residents, Newberry College students, workers at V.C. Summer who are living in local hotels and the region.

“This will be good for the town,” said Trainor.

Trainor says the developer has done a similar project in Sacramento, Calif.

At one time the shopping center did house the old Hub theater and the area was known as a hang out for young people in the community.

Trainor says he needs the community to show its support for the project and come out to meet the developer.

On July 31, at 6 p.m. at the Newberry Opera House a reception will be held for the community to learn about the project and show their support.

The reception is open to the public and everyone is asked to come.
