A North Carolina man was arrested after leading Newberry County Sheriff’s deputies on a chase Saturday.

Virgil Edgar Stanley, 44, of Lumberton, N.C., was arrested and charged with speeding, failure to stop for a blue light, operating motor vehicle without license in possession and unlawful operation of unsafe or improperly equipped vehicle.

Around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, deputies spotted Stanley speeding on Highway 121 at Tesseniar Road, just outside of Newberry.

Officers tried to stop Stanley but he drove around 80 mph and passed two cars as the deputy sounded his siren and blew his horn.

Stanley finally stopped his vehicle near the Old Newberry Highway and Highway 176.

The North Carolina man told officers he was a regular guy and did not see the officer behind him.

He also stated he was taking items to an auction.

Officers found the items to “be illegally trademarked pillows to include trademark infringement on University of South Carolina logos, Harley Davidson logos, John Deere logos, and Winnie the Pooh logos,” according to the report.
