The community is encouraged to come together for an event that will help them embrace challenges presented within Newberry County.

The event is hosted by the Newberry County Coalition on Underage Drinking who is bringing in a motivational speaker, Charles Weathers of The Weathers Group.

The event is slated for Aug. 21 and will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Firehouse Conference Center. While this is a free event offered as a gift for the community members, people are encouraged to reserve a spot by Thursday. A free lunch will be provided.

Cultivating Community is the name of the event with unity highlighted in community which is the theme of the message.

The Newberry coalition is all about putting an end to underage drinking; however, they are not about prohibition.

Weathers will come in and speak about how residents can come together and produce solutions and approaches to the problem of underage drinking as well as other social and economic challenges

“Community is more a sense of belonging than a physical space so it’s important that local leaders understand how to maximize their community engagement efforts,” states Weathers. “We work, live and worship within the same proximity; why not come together to have a conversation on how to more effectively advance the common good, together.”

Residents and business people alike will be able to come together, listen to Weathers and come up ideas and questions to to help overcome issues, including underage drinking, within the county.

The coalition is made possible with a grant provided through the Westview Behavioral Health Services who is also a partner through the coalition. Other partners include Newberry County School District, Chamber of Commerce and many local businesses in the county as well as people within law enforcement.

For more information or to register for this event, please contact Tom Perry at tperry@westviewbehavioral.org or 276-5690. Registration deadline is Thursday.
