NEWBERRY — After their game was postponed from Saturday, the Newberry High Bulldog boys basketball team never trailed in its 104-56 second round playoff victory over Crescent High in Scott Gym.
The game against Crescent was scheduled for Saturday but was called off due to the wintry mix falling over the area.
The 24-2 Bulldogs will travel to Landrum High School on Wednesday for a berth to the AA Upper State championship game Saturday at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.
It took Newberry 2:20 at the start of the game to build up a 9-0 lead. This lead over the Tigers would increase to 29-9 after the first quarter.
Newberry’s 55 first half points were the second most points a Bulldog team has scored this season during its first 16 minutes of play.
For the 17th time this season, a Newberry opponent was held to under 30 first half points – 24 in this case.
Trey Miller was set to inbound the ball for Newberry to start the second half. His cross-court lob to Jalin Alexander for the dunk was the first time a second half for Newberry had started this way.
Newberry went on a 10-2 run in the first two minutes of the second half as it brought the near-capacity crowd to its feet with the Bulldogs leading 65-26.
This marked the 26th straight time this season that Newberry has scored at least 65 points in a game.
Heading into the final eight minutes of play in the final home game of the season, Newberry had an 85-38 advantage.
With three minutes left in the game, Jimmy Willingham became the 15th Bulldog to score in the game as the senior hit nothing but net on a three-pointer.
Alexander and Jaylen Lindsay led the Newberry scoring as they scored 16 points apiece. Bennett Wilson had a season-high 13 points as the 5-9 junior got his first career dunk during the night.
Raquon Davenport tied a season-high 13 points, which all came in the second half on Monday. Notorious Booker finished with 10 points while Kaheem Praylow scored nine first half points.
Trey Gary scored six points in the second half while Dominic Gimore saw all five of his points come in the final quarter. Jeremy Summers and Trey Miller scored four points apiece while Willingham finished with three. Devin Harmon, Jaylen Reeder, Tyon Williams and Tovaris Cureton scored two points apiece to finish the Newberry scoring.
For the second straight season, the Newberry boys went undefeated inside the confines of Newberry County.
