Newberry College’s mascot will be the star of a new book that will be released Oct. 13. during homecoming.

“Scar: The Helpful Wolf,” written by Newberry College graduate and Newberry Observer writer Kevin Boozer, is a children’s book set on the Newberry College campus.

It follows Scar as he helps a family look around campus to find a lost loved one during a game day.

The book is dedicated to a person from Newberry College who has contributed a great deal to the institution, and the identity of that person will be revealed the day of the book’s release.

“Scar” was inspired in part by a similar book about the University of South Carolina’s mascot, Cocky.

Although targeted at children up to age seven, Boozer hopes the book will be useful as a teaching tool in schools, and to further the College’s teaching mission.

He also hopes the Newberry College family will enjoy it.

“The book is nostalgic and a good keepsake,” Boozer says.

Faculty and staff of Newberry College had the opportunity to donate to the book in honor of the person being celebrated.

“They have responded generously,” Boozer says.

Boozer, a 2010 Newberry graduate, has been writing children’s stories for over 10 years.

He has written more than 20 unpublished children’s books for his church since 2005.

Since 2007, several of Boozer’s stories have been published as articles in “Little Lutheran,” a magazine for children.

A book signing will take place during homecoming Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next to the education tent.

Books will also be sold during halftime.

Buyers will also be able to have their picture taken with Scar. Books will later be available at the Newberry College bookstore and at Books on Main.

Proceeds from the book will benefit the Children’s Literacy Library of the Speers Street School Project.
