The Charleston Jazz Orchestra’s hero is undoubtedly the Count Basie Orchestra. CJO draws on the Basie band's long tradition of musicality, precision, and most of all, its swing. For its inaugural season, CJO presented one of its most beloved shows, Countin' On Basie - a collection of hits paying homage to William "Count" Basie, one of the greatest American bandleaders of all time. Over its eight decades of performing, the Basie band has employed South Carolina musicians, giving it a feel that comes naturally to the Charleston area's own ensemble. No band has had more of an impact on swing with its jumpin’ beat and free swinging style. This time around, for CJO's second show of its fifth anniversary season, Maestro Charlton Singleton returns with Basie, presenting music from the album The Complete Atomic Mr. Basie. The 1958 critically acclaimed recording is widely considered Basie's best. The album name speaks for itself, featuring epic arrangements by the legendary Neil Hefi. From the smokin' swing of "The Kid from Redbank," to the stealth swagger of "Midnite Blue," the simple beauty of "Li’l Darlin’," and the great proficiency and precision of "Whirly-Bird," this show is certain to be nothing short of atomic. Set 1 begins at 7PM and Set 2 at 10PM.
