Hello everyone, local news from ‘The Whitty’ on the way after we catch up with our birthday wishes. Gottrocks the birthday fairy texted in last week’s and this week’s wishes. Let’s let him do his thing.

Birthdays

Happy Birthday wishes to Marty McMurtury, Christianna Gilliam, David Stricklnad, Tina Steen, Jackie Goins, Gail Vanlue, Jessie Crumpton, Kem King, Carol Owens, Joe Brown Jr., Ronald Bolin, Bertrice T. Robinson, Kyle Arrowood, Grady Overstreet and Roger Finney.

How about football in the heat? I say if every year: it “just don’t feel right” wearing shorts to a football game seems it gets hotter every year in August and September. It’s nice to have the football jamboree in Whitmire, hopefully this will happen again, and new folks will visit The Whitty and see all she has to offer, like our new grass volleyball court, just across the road-from Legends Stadium on Golf Alley.

Speaking of Golf Alley, it is a nine-hole golf course with reasonable green fees and membership packages. There are special tees for youth. The Whitmire Golf Association maintains the course and the carts. The association has a Facebook page with their contact information.

Upcoming events

The Whitmire Recreation Department is holding their Fall sports sign-up. Entry forms for youth tackle and flag football, cheerleaders are available at Town Hall and Roches Pharmacy. There are three age groups. Fees are$50 for tackle and $35 for flag and cheerleaders.

The department and sports sign-ups are coordinated by The Recreation Committee of Chrystal Harsha, Galen Roche, Debbie Harris and Beth Broome. The recreation Department has its own Facebook page, as the town of Whitmire and has its own social media page. Check each page for updates. Their e-mail addresses are: whitmirerecreation@gmail.com and townofwhitmire@bellsouth.net. Reach them by phone at 803-694-2356.

The Whitmire Economic Development Board, along with the Whitmire Museum, will present an antique bottle show and sale on Oct. 24 at the Whitmire Community Center. Be sure and check our official social media pages for updates and event.
