Hello everybody. Good to be back with some news this week. How have you been handling this hot and dry summer? I would never wish this weather on anyone. Our lawn, plants, flowers are so mad at us. As I write this column, rain is forecast, so let me hurry so I can see if the drops I hear hitting the awning are real. Let’s do our birthdays, then on to local news.

Birthdays

Happy Birthday to Martin Miller, John Roche Jr., Dale Prince, Jimmie Seymore, Nancy G. Hutson, Kitcy Johnson, Coretta Coleman, Kay Beard, Laura Smith, Julia Wessinger, Angie Stephens, Ann Harris, Wendy Cranford and Nancy G. Sartor. Belated happy 41st anniversary wishes to my cousins Audrey and Jack Gilliam.

Sympathy

On a sad note, we send our sympathy and best wishes to the families of Coach William O. “Lefty “Johnson. Coach Lefty was such a well loved member of our community. He was a caring coach, teacher and friend. A true motivator and mentor of young lives shaped by his guidance during his long and successful career at Whitmire High School. He will be missed by so many of us.

Local news

The annual high school football jamboree with be held in Whitmire this year at Legends Stadium on Aug. 13. Time to be announced at a later edition. Legends Stadium is located beside Golf Alley at the end of Union Street. You’ll see the blue and gold wolverine on the white stadium walls. Feel free to check the school’s and town’s Facebook pages for more information.

Whitmire Recreation Fall Sports entry forms are available at Town Hall and Roche’s Pharmacy. I hope to soon scan them in and make them available for parents and kids to download. The Whitmire Recreation Department has its own Facebook page. Parents and coaches can post comments and questions there.

Be sure and shop our local businesses on S.C. 121 to Church Street, Main Street, Market Street to U.S. 72/S.C. 121. When looking for back to school stuff — from hair cuts, to clothing, to an art/craft treat for mom — we have some nice things here in The Whitty.

Guess we will see you next week. My helpers, Gottrocks and Garabund, both ran hot this summer and both are on hiatus. They will be back at the start of school, they said. OK then, we’ll see you next edition. In the meantime, send us your local news and photos to news2cassie@yahoo.com.
