NEWBERRY — The Mid-Carolina Dixie All Stars Ozone 11-12 year old team traveled to Ridge Spring Monetta for the District 3 tournament June 19 through June 24.


The first game of the tournament matched Mid-Carolina and Edgefield-Johnston. Mid-Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a homerun by Alex Riley. Edgefield-Johnston entered the scoring column in the bottom half of the first to make the score 2-1 Mid-Carolina.


After two scoreless innings, Edgefield-Johnston plated five runs, leaving Mid-Carolina behind 6-2. Edgefield would add five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a commanding lead 11-2. Mid-Carolina could not mount a comeback in the top of the sixth leaving the final score 11-2.


Game two


Mid-Carolina faced the home team Ridge Spring Monetta for their second game. BJ Tobe would lead Mid-Carolina right out of the gate with a lead-off homerun. Tobe also added runs in the fourth and sixth innings to lead Mid-Carolina in hits and runs. Anthony McLean and Jerran Long followed Tobe in the hit parade to notch a victory for the Mid-Carolina All Stars 6-0. Clayton Day picked up the win for Mid-Carolina with three scoreless innings of work. Conner Grey picked up the save for Mid-Carolina.


Game three


The third game, Mid-Carolina was slated to face Abbeville. Mid-Carolina would add three runs in the top of the second on a walk from Zachorian Byrd and two stolen bases. Payton Gardner would drive in Byrd on a single to right field. Mid-Carolina would add four more runs in the top of the fourth, behind hits from BJ Tobe and Clayton Day.


Tobe and Day would get on the scoreboard again in the sixth behind a homerun from Tobe, his second of the tournament. Mid-Carolina defeated Abbeville 8-3. Zachorian Byrd picked up the win for Mid-Carolina going for four strong innings. Alex Riley pitched the fifth and sixth innings for Mid-Carolina.


Game four


Mid-Carolina faced a talented Saluda team in the final game to have a chance to play an undefeated Edgefield team in the championship.


Saluda jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning but MC came storming back and notched the score at one behind a hit and run from Byrd. Tobe would cause more havoc on the base path for Saluda’s catcher so he scored three more times for Mid-Carolina.


Mid-Carolina added two more runs in the sixth behind hits from Remington Cox and Tobe. Mid-Carolina defeated Saluda 6-2. Day picked up the win for Mid-Carolina while Conner Grey pitched three scoreless innings to close the door on Saluda.


Game six would be a rematch of Game one, with Edgefield-Johnston versus Mid-Carolina.


Edgefield struck first behind a walk from Butler and stolen base. Mid-Carolina added a run in the second to notch the score at one behind a hit from Byrd and two stolen bases.


Mid-Carolina would add another run in the fourth behind a hit from Tobe and two stolen bases. Edgefield was not finished as they added runs in the fifth and sixth to win the game 3-2.


Byrd pitched a brilliant ball game for Mid-Carolina keeping Edgefield off balance the whole inning. Conner Grey relieved Byrd in the bottom half of the sixth and gave up a three hop single up the middle to lose the ballgame.


“Both teams left it all on the field today. I am so proud of how our guys competed and played today. We did not win the game but showed a lot of fight and heart and that is all we can ask for,” said Head Coach Joey Long. “Our guys displayed awesome teamwork and showed a lot of tenacity to bounce back from a game one loss.”
