NEWBERRY — The South Atlantic Conference announced the annual Commissioner’s Honor Roll late last week and the Newberry College Wolves had 106 selections in the 15 SAC sports sponsored by the school meet the requirements to earn the honor.
To be eligible for inclusion on the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, student-athletes must have competed in a sponsored championship sport and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the academic year.
When the other four varsity sports at Newberry are added, a total of 136 student-athletes earned the requisite 3.30 grade point average. Of those, seven had a perfect 4.00 grade point average.
The baseball and volleyball teams tied for the most honorees with 14 apiece, while the softball team had 13 honorees, the cheer squad had 12, women’s soccer team had 11 and women’s lacrosse added 10. The listing also includes seven dual sport athletes.
South Carolina was well represented in the listing for Newberry, with 49 student-athletes coming from the Palmetto State. International student-athletes appeared in the listing 20 times.
Women’s basketball player Kirsti Hawkins was one of those named to the honor roll last week from Newberry County. Hawkins is an Education major from Newberry.
Laura Beth Shealy, cheerleader for Newberry College is a Freshman from Newberry. She has not yet declared a major.
Blaire Taylor is a Sophomore from Prosperity. She also has not declared a major. Taylor is a member of the Scarlet Poms team.
