NEWBERRY — Fourteen newcomers have been signed to the Wolves’ baseball roster for the 2014-15 academic year to bolster the already strong roster as the Wolves look to improve on a strong 2014 season.

Newberry College head baseball coach Russell Triplett announced the following additions:

Michael Gonzalez is a 5-foot-11, 180 pound outfielder from Wilsonville, Ore. Gonzalez played the last two seasons at Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., and was named first team all-Southern Region and second team all-NWAACC outfielder in 2014. In 2014 he hit .329 with 46 hits, 10 doubles, a homer and 24 RBIs. He struck out only 14 times in 140 at bats and walked 15 times for the Penguins.

Joey Ruiz is a 6-foot-2, 205 pound first baseman from Suwanee, Ga. He was a two-sport athlete in high school at Hebron Christian Academy and was named to 2014 all-region and all-Gwinnett County teams. Ruiz was recognized by the Georgia Dugout Club as a stellar student-athlete and was selected to play in 2014 Gwinnett County High School All-Star Classic.

Tommy Passerello is a 5-foot-11, 160 pound catcher from Davenport, Fla., where he was a four-year varsity letterman at Haines City HS. He was named 2013 all-Polk County honorable mention and 2014 all-Polk County Academic Athlete.

Jeff Sneed is a 5-foot-8, 180 pound catcher from Cumming, Ga. He played last two seasons at Louisburg CC, where he started as a freshman in 2012 and was named captain for the 2013 season. He had a perfect fielding percentage and graduated from Louisburg with a 4.0 in 2013.

Zach White is a 5-foot-11, 185 pound infielder from Taylors, where he was a three-year starter at Eastside HS. He was named All Region in 2014 and graduated in the top 20 percent of his senior class with a 4.24 GPA.

Jontrai Jackson is a 6-foot, 170 pound infielder from Columbia, where he was a five year starter at Lower Richland HS. He was named all-region in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and was selected as team MVP in 2014. Jackson also lettered three years as a defensive back and wide receiver on the Diamond Hornets’ football team.

Jacob Bass is a 5-foot-11, 150 pound infielder from North Augusta, who just completed his prep career at Strom Thurmond HS. Bass was selected to the all-region team in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and was an All-State selection in 2012. He was named MVP of the SCBCAA North/South All-Star game in 2014 and was selected as top male athlete at Strom Thurmond in 2014.

Connor Teague is a 6-foot-2, 180 pound infielder from Moncks Corner, where he was a three-year starter at Berkeley HS. He was an all-region selection in 2013 and 2014, was named to the High School Sports Report all-rookie team in 2012 and All-State team in 2013.

Jason Taylor is a 6-foot-2, 195 pound infielder from Woodruff, where he played at Woodruff HS. Taylor was an all-area selection in 2013 and 2014 as well as all-region. He won the 2013 Palmetto Games Gold Glove Award and played in the 2014 SCBCAA North/South All-Star game.

Ben Herring is a 5-foot-11 catcher from Hopkins, who played at Dreher HS in Columbia. Herring was named all-region in 2013 and 2014 and was selected to the Diamond Prospects All-Academic and All-State teams in 2014. He was on the SCBCAA and HSSR All State teams for 2014 and played in the 2014 NC/SC Select game.

Robert Westenreider is a 6-foot-1, 230 pound left handed pitcher from Taylors, where he prepped at Blue Ridge HS. He was selected as all-region and All-State in 2014 and played in the 2014 SCBCAA North/South All-Star game.

Dylan Southerland is a 6-foot-1 right handed pitcher and outfielder from Belton. He played at Belton-Honea Path HS where he was all-region and All-State in 2014. Southerland was selected MVP of his team at the 2013 Diamond Prospects Palmetto Games and played in the 2014 SCBCAA North/South All Star game.

John Mason Reynolds is a 5-foot-8, 170 pound right handed pitcher from Taylors, and was a three-year starter at Blue Ridge HS. He is familiar with playing at the Smith Road Complex, as he faced off against the Chapin/Newberry team there in the 2014 American Legion baseball playoffs.

Joseph Chaney is a utility player from Ninety Six. He was selected all-region and all-Lakelands in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Chaney was also a three-time SCBCAA 2A All-State Selection in 2011, 201, and 2014. Chaney was a member of the Wildcats’ 2014 2A baseball State Championship team and played in the 2014 SCBCAA North/South All-Star game.
