NEWBERRY — Newberry College head wrestling coach Jason Valek has announced the regular season competition schedule for the Wolves’ 2014-15 wrestling season.
The first semester is loaded with open tournaments as the Wolves search for the right mix for their tournament and dual lineup.
The season starts with one of its toughest tests, as the Wolves will compete in a dual match with two-time defending ACC champions Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., on Nov. 8.
From there, the Wolves compete in open tournaments at Virginia Tech (Nov. 9), UNC Pembroke (Nov. 9), N.C. State (Nov. 16), King (Nov. 23) and Appalachian State (Jan. 24).
The Eighth Annual Newberry Duals will take place in Eleazer Arena on Nov. 29, with Anderson, Belmont Abbey, Coker, Cumberland (Tenn.), Darton State, Limestone, Lindsey Wilson, Truett-McConnell and UNC Pembroke participating in this year’s event.
The Wolves are away from home for December and January and will look to win their fifth straight title at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on Dec. 13-14.
Duals at Belmont Abbey (Dec. 18) and Coker (Jan. 2) are the Wolves’ final preparations for the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Jan. 10-11. Newberry was the runner-up at the National Duals in 2014 and has never finished outside the top five in the national team championship event.
The final road duals are at Limestone against former assistant coach Kelly Revells on Jan. 21, and at King on Feb. 4.
The regular season wraps up with three events at home. UNC Pembroke comes calling with a dual match on Feb. 10, with Senior Night taking place against Anderson on Feb. 17. The Newberry Open will be held on Feb. 14.
The Super Region II qualifier tournament will be hosted by UNC Pembroke on Feb. 27-28, while the NCAA Division II National Tournament is at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Mo., on March 13-14.
