NEWBERRY — Following 2013’s 9-3 season and NCAA Division II playoff appearance, the Newberry College Wolves and been predicted to finish in the third place in the South Atlantic Conference according to the annual coaches’ poll, released Aug. 5.
Newberry collected 36 points in the voting among the league’s head coaches. Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne split the eight first place votes, with the Eagles getting the nod in the poll by a 46 to 45 margin in the votes.
Newberry finished tied for second in the league with Carson-Newman last season and its three losses only came to the two teams ahead of them in this preseason poll.
Wingate is just behind Newberry in the upper tier of vote-getters, all over 30 points.
Newberry tied with preseason favorites Carson-Newman for the most preseason all-South Atlantic Conference selections with 11, as the preseason all-SAC team was also released Tuesday.
The scarlet and gray will have homefield advantage against their closest competitors in the poll as Carson-Newman (Nov. 8), Lenoir-Rhyne (Oct. 18) and Wingate (Oct. 4) all visit the friendly confines of historic Setzler Field.
Newberry kicks off its 101st season of intercollegiate football on Sept. 6 at Charleston Southern, with the home opener on Sept. 13 against first-year program Limestone.
