NEWBERRY — Newberry College is represented well in the collegiate summer baseball leagues again in 2014, both on the field and in the front office.
Close to home, four Wolves are on rosters in the Coastal Plain League.
Pitchers Cole Cromer and Jonathan Rosenberger are on the roster for the defending Pettit Cup champion Peninsula Pilots based in Hampton, Va. Cromer was the Pilots’ opening night starter May 27, giving up one run on four hits in 6.0 innings as the Pilots defeated Wilson 3-2.
Infielders Robert Kosch and D.J. Martinez will play for the Petersburg (Va.) Generals. Neither player participated in the Generals’ opening game May 27.
The CPL’s two local teams are the Columbia Blowfish and Florence RedWolves. Peninsula plays at Columbia on June 25 in the Pilots’ only trip to South Carolina, while Petersburg’s only trip to the Palmetto State is a June 28 visit to Florence.
With both Peninsula and Petersburg in the CPL’s East Division, the Newberry foursome will find themselves in plenty of awkward situations as Cromer and Rosenberger try to strikeout Kosch and Martinez in 16 games between the two teams this summer.
Pitcher Joe Vonderschimdt will play in the Atlanta-area Sunbelt League, which was formed in 2005. The rising sophomore will play for the Windward Braves, based in his hometown of Alpharetta. The Braves’ season starts on June 2.
Also representing Newberry in summer league action is athletic communications student assistant Caitlyn Smith. The rising senior will work in the front office for the East Texas Pump Jacks of the Texas Collegiate League, based at historic Driller Park in Kilgore, Texas. Smith — who serves Newberry as a top assistant for multiple sports — is the Pump Jacks’ media relations and social media intern for the 2014 season, which began May 30.
