NEWBERRY — Newberry College head volleyball coach Todd Hay has announced the Wolves’ playing schedule for the 2014 season, including a season-opening tournament at home for the first time.
The Wolves have made three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and will look to continue that solid streak.
The 2014 season opens with the Wolves Invitational in the friendly confines of Eleazer Arena. The field is comprised of two teams from each of the Southeast Region’s three conferences with Newberry and Wingate representing the South Atlantic Conference, Belmont Abbey and King representing Conference Carolinas and Columbus State and USC Aiken representing the Peach Belt Conference. Each team will play their four non-conference foes once in the 10-match tournament on September 5-6.
In the season’s second week, the Wolves will make the short trip to the CSRA for the USC Aiken Invitational, where they will play Lees-McRae, Limestone, Francis Marion and USC Aiken to complete the non-conference schedule on September 12-13.
From there, Newberry will play 22 South Atlantic Conference matches in a home-and-home format with the conference’s other 11 institutions. The top eight finishers in the regular season standings will advance to the Food Lion SAC Tournament at Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 14-16.
The Wolves’ strength of schedule will take a boost in the regional rankings later in the season thanks to the strength of the conference and the early non-conference schedule. Nine of Newberry’s 26 matches are against 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. Of the seven schools Newberry will play out of the league, five recorded 19 wins or more last season.
