NEW YORK — Newberry College wide receiver Corey Washington has agreed to an undrafted free agent deal with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, he confirmed after the completion of the 2014 NFL Draft on Saturday.

Washington was one of Division II’s most electric players at the receiver position, a D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-American, a first team DAKTRONICS all-Super Region Two selection and second team Don Hansen’s Football Gazette all-Super Region Two pick. He became just the second Newberry player in 100 years to score 100 points in one season with 16 touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions.

In the Wolves’ 12 games, Washington caught 44 passes for 839 yards and a school single-season record 13 touchdowns. He also returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown in the regular season finale against North Greenville and had a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns in the playoff game at Carson-Newman. He was the only player in the South Atlantic Conference to earn player of the week honors at different positions, with offensive honors for the Brevard game and special teams honors for the North Greenville game.

His 13 touchdown receptions this year ranked second in the conference and 10th in the nation.

He is one of only four players in the 28-year history of the SAC to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game. He is tied with West Texas A&M’s Nathan Slaughter for the most special teams returns for touchdowns this season with three, although Washington’s came on only five special teams plays.

His 839 receiving yards this year tied with NFL tight end Brandon Bostick’s 2010 season for third-most in a season at Newberry.

In his two-year career at Newberry, the junior college transfer had 95 receptions for 1,615 yard and 22 touchdowns. He ranks ninth in career receptions, seventh in career yardage and second in career touchdowns at Newberry.

Washington was a first team all-SAC selection for the 2013 season after earning second team honors in 2012.

Washington joins two other Newberry players in the NFL: Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Ron Parker and Green Bay Packers tight end Brandon Bostick.
