NEWBERRY — The Newberry College Scarlet Poms dance team traveled to Atlanta to compete in the 2014 Cheersport Nationals and came back with two titles in Open Jazz and Co-ed Hip- Hop. This was the first competition for the team, who have only been dancing together for eight months.

“I feel like the team performed really well. The competition was broken up into two days, and after the first day I gave corrections to them and the next day they danced like they had been practicing all night. It was the best I ever seen them dance,” said Coach Jenna Eyre.

“I think we did the absolute best we could. We went out on that floor and gave it our all and when we walked off we had that feeling that we just killed that routine. We practiced so hard leading up to the competition, so when we all believed we did our absolute best it made all the hard practices worth it,” said freshman Jenna Rabel.

Eyre is in her first year of coaching at Newberry College and loves that she gets to continue her passion for dance.

“I’ve been dancing since I was two years old and I just love how close the team has gotten in such a short amount of time. The team has been dancing together for only eight months, and to win two titles, is unheard of. I am so proud of them and I give them credit for all of their hard work,” Eyre said.

On March 14, the Scarlet Poms travelled to Myrtle Beach returning to Newberry with another national championship, as they won the Collegiate Hip Hop title at the Cheer Ltd. Collegiate National Championship at CANAM.

Newberry competed in two categories at the one day event on Friday and walked away with the championship in hip hop. The Scarlet Poms scored a 77.70 in the competition, pushing aside their rival of USC Aiken by a total of 6.92.

The Scarlet Poms finished up 3.12 points out of first place in jazz, with a runner-up finish to USC Aiken in the collegiate jazz division.
