NEWBERRY — Wolves senior KerriAnn Barlage netted a hat trick in Newberry’s 18-5 home loss to No. 6 West Chester at Setzler Field on Monday.
In a rare noon start, the Wolves (2-7) surrendered the opening goal of the game to the Rams (2-0) nearly two minutes into the game. It was less than a minute later that Barlage scored her first goal of the day on a free position.
West Chester netted eight straight before sophomore Alexis Cathcart controlled a draw and drew a foul near the goal. Awarded a free position opportunity, Cathcart scored her fifth goal of the season to pull Newberry within six.
The Rams responded with two straight goals, before wasting a possession with 12:48 left in the first period. On a West Chester possession, Barlage forced a turnover and snagged a ground ball to turn the possession toward Newberry’s end of the field, after a successful clearance, the ball wound up in the possession of sophomore Carly Marksberry who scored her sixth goal of the season.
West Chester scored three goals to wrap up the opening period.
After seeing the Rams net four straight to open the second, Barlage corralled an assist from Marksberry and scored her second of the day. Barlage completed the hat trick with 8:15 left in regulation on a free position.
The Rams tallied one final goal before time expired.
Barlage led Newberry with six draw controls, three ground balls, three caused turnovers and three goals.
Newberry’s sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Raffaele notched 11 saves in the loss.
The Wolves return to conference play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. first draw against Brevard.
