WHITMIRE — Thanks to a standout effort by Bulldog pitchers, Newberry High School cruised to victory Tuesday night, defeating the Wolverines 10-0.
Senior Jack Huggins (2-0) led the Bulldogs’ pitching effort by striking out 10 batters over four innings in a tight game that Newberry led 1-0 through four innings.
Sophomores Ryne Huggins and Andrew Livingston pitched one inning each to combine with Jack Huggins for 12 strikeouts and a two-hitter.
The game was close until Newberry plated eight runs in the fifth inning to pull away from the Wolverines.
Newberry Coach Lindsey Stribble said, “It wasn’t easy tonight. Whitmire pitcher Alex Ellison was tough and kept us off balance through the first four innings, but our pitchers Ryne, Jack, and Andrew all threw really well.”
Newberry was able to get things going offensively in the fifth inning by getting the lead-off hitter on base and playing a little small ball to load the bases.
The big hit of the night came from senior Hercules Etheredge who hit a bases loaded triple.
Leading hitters for the Dogs were Andrew Livingston 2-4, Jake Bickley 1-3 and Hercules Etheredge 2-4.
Newberry (3-0) returns to action at home at Bill Harvey Field on Thursday to host Fairfield Central at 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs then travel to Saluda to open region play on Friday.
