KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — The Newberry Wolves had all five players within four strokes of par Tuesday, using that consistent performance to earn a three-stroke win and the championship of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate.
Newberry shot a 291-295=586 (+18) for the 36-hole event to finish ahead of Barton, Erskine and Limestone by three strokes. The championship was Newberry’s first tournament victory since the Rollins Invitational in October 2011.
John Paul Ferguson was Newberry’s low scorer in the event, carding a 2-over par 144 for the tournament thanks to an even par 71 on Tuesday. He finished in a tie for third place.
Dixon Walker tied for 10th place in the event with a 4-over par 156, also shooting 4-over in his Tuesday round. Tommy Hurst was a stroke behind Walker at 5-over par 157 in a tie for 12th place.
Richard Mansell tied for 22nd with an 8-over par 150 and Ryan Wilkinson tied for 47th with a 14-over par 156, dropping eight strokes from his first round total.
The Wolves will now take a month away from the competitive circuit before returning to the links for the Lander Bearcat Classic at Greenwood Country Club on March 24-25.
