ROCK HILL — Newberry College infielder Albert Baur has been named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Baur, a Philadelphia, Pa., native and graduate of Neumann-Goretti HS, had a huge week for Newberry, hitting .524 with five extra-base hits and 14 RBIs as the Wolves went 3-3 overall.
Baur totaled two hits and an RBI in midweek games with Erskine and GRU Augusta before pounding out nine hits and 12 RBIs in a weekend series with Catawba.
The junior’s top performance of the Catawba series came on Saturday in the seven-inning game of the doubleheader, where he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and eight RBIs — one shy of a SAC record. He also homered in Sunday’s series finale and had a .692 batting average and 1.385 slugging percentage in the series.
Baur leads the SAC with 26 RBIs - a margin of 11 more than his nearest competition - with 19 of those RBIs coming in conference play. He also leads the league in slugging percentage (.678), hits (26) and total bases (40). He ranks second in the league in batting average (.441) and doubles (6).
