WINGATE, N.C. — A pair of Newberry seniors finished the day 2-0 as Romina Adum and Marina Ziehe both picked up singles and doubles victories in Newberry’s 5-4 loss at No. 50 Wingate on Monday at the Wingate University Tennis Complex.


Newberry (6-4, 2-1 SAC) fell behind after the first doubles match, but knotted the match back up with a victory at No. 1 doubles by Adum and fellow senior Susana Aguirre. Newberry not only tied the match up, but took control of the match with a victory over the Bulldogs’ (5-2, 1-0 SAC) No. 2 doubles pair.


At No. 2 doubles, the Wolves’ pair of sophomore Vanessa Ortiz and senior Marina Ziehe was of the comeback variety, as the Newberry duo battled from behind to top Tiffany Williams and Layla Tanik 9-7.


Singles play saw the Bulldogs regain the lead from the Wolves with wins at No. 4, No. 1 and No. 3 singles. The Wolves’ first singles victory came at No. 2 as Adum battled through a tight first set, before earning a large second set win over Caroline Holland to pull the team score to 4-3 in Wingate’s favor.


Wingate clinched the match with a win at No. 5 singles. The Wolves final point of the match came at No. 6 as Ziehe came back from a set down to top Williams.
