NEWBERRY — After a tough loss Tuesday, the Newberry Wolves rebounded with an 8-4 victory over the Georgia Regents Augusta Jaguars at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday evening.
Newberry moves to 8-4 on the season, while GRU Augusta is now 5-7. The Wolves are next in action in a South Atlantic Conference series at Catawba which has been rescheduled to a 4 p.m. Saturday doubleheader and a 2 p.m. Sunday single game.
After falling behind the Diamond Jags by a 3-1 score in the sixth, the Wolves responded with seven straight runs to take a commanding lead.
Causey Stanland hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one run before a huge two-out rally. Nolan Schrenker hit an RBI single with another run scoring on a GRU error to give the Wolves the lead. Albert Baur added an RBI single before the end of the inning to give Newberry a 5-3 lead.
In the eighth, Ryan Cranmer led off the inning with his first homerun of the season. Jermale Paige then hit a double down the line to set off a rally that saw two more runs come across.
Paige was Newberry’s top offensive performer, going 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a double and two runs scored. Baur, JoJo Bradley and Schrenker each had two hits in the game.
On the mound, Wesley Camp picked up the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to move to 4-0 on the year. Jake Nidiffer allowed three runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings in his first career start. Austin Walker picked up his first save, allowing one unearned run in 2.0 innings pitched, as the three pitchers issued no walks on the day.
