DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The Newberry men’s tennis team ran into a tough North Georgia team at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Park on Tuesday as the Nighthawks cruised to a 7-2 win over the Wolves.

The Nighthawks (4-0) eased through doubles play as the Wolves (2-2) fell at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, while at No. 2 the duo of sophomore Fernando Espana and junior Carlos Nicolopulos forced a tiebreak in their loss to Giovani Santos and Sam Gantt.

Newberry earned points at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with a pair of three-set victories. The No. 1 singles match saw senior Michael Saunders win the first set, before dropping set two and requiring a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Mateus Camasmie. At No. 2 singles Vinicius Botelho won both set two and the third-set tiebreak to top Rodrigo Magan.

The Wolves saw four singles matches end in two-set victories for the Night Hawks.

The Newberry men travel on Thursday as the Wolves head to Georgia Regents-Augusta for a 2 p.m. match against the No. 20 Jaguars. GRU-Augusta is also ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the No. 6 team in the Southeast Region.
