PROSPERITY — The Newberry High School varsity boys went on an 8-2 run during the opening minute against Mid-Carolina High School Saturday and cruised to an 85-56 victory. The win meant the Bulldogs finished with their second straight season of being undefeated in region play.
The Bulldogs led after the first quarter 24-16 and at the break, 39-25.
Newberry’s 24-17 third quarter run all but put the game out of reach heading into the final eight minutes of play at 63-42.
Bennett Wilson and Jaylen Lindsay each scored 15 points to lead the Newberry scoring.
Trey Miller saw 11 points go in during the first three quarters while all of Notorious Booker’s 10 points came in the second half of play.
Trey Gary scored eight points while Dominic Gilmore scored seven.
Devin Harmon scored six points, Raquon Davenport(five), Demarcus Gilmore scored four points while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points each of Sentrell Quattlebaum and Tyrell Mendenhall.
Newberry, who improves to 20-4 on the season, will take a 11-1 record since January first into the opening round of the playoffs against an opponent to be announced.
Mid-Carolina, who drops to 7-16 on the season, was led by the 19 points of Zach Parker.
Danton Hyman scored 16 ponts while Zy Hiller scored seven.
Also, Dante Boyd saw six points fall in, Dominique Wheeler (four) and the two points each of Jhi Wright and Trey Green finished off the Mid-Carolina scoring.
The Rebels will travel to Batesburg-Leesville today (Monday) for a tie-breaking game with Saluda with the winner getting third place and the loser fourth between the two teams.
As region champions the Bulldogs will host a playoff game against an opponent to be determined. As of Sunday there was a four-way tie in the upper state region that had to be sorted out with games set for Tuesday.
