ROCK HILL — Newberry College first baseman Eric Barbieri has been named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week following an outstanding performance in four games last week.
Barbieri, a senior from Marlton, N.J., was previously named preseason all-SAC as a designated hitter, and he has been fantastic at the plate through the season’s first seven games.
Barbieri hit .500 with four extra-base hits last week - including three homers - as Newberry went 3-1 overall.
Barbieri opened his week by going 3-for-5 with a double and a home run on Wednesday in a 12-0 Newberry win over North Greenville. The first baseman then piled up six hits, two homers and seven RBIs in a 2-1 SAC series victory against LMU over the weekend.
The senior finished the week with nine RBIs and a 1.056 slugging percentage.
His 11 RBIs on the season lead the SAC and his three homeruns are tied for the league lead. He ranks second in the league with 11 hits on the year and his 21 total bases lead the league.
