ROCK HILL — The Newberry College softball team is picked 11th in the annual South Atlantic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which was released Tuesday, while junior Gabby Bedard was named a member of the preseason all-conference second team.
Bedard, a preseason all-conference second team outfielder, was the only member of the Newberry squad to play in all 40 games during the 2013 season. A starter in each of Newberry’s games a year ago, Bedard was second on the team in hitting with a .329 clip. Sitting atop the Newberry lineup, Bedard posted a .382 on-base percentage, while leading the team in hits with 46 and runs with 25.
With a perfect fielding percentage, Bedard was among the conference leaders on the defensive side of the game. Bedard was a Second Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection in 2013.
As a team the Wolves were picked to finish 11th in the conference after finishing ninth a season ago.
Lenoir-Rhyne is picked to finish atop the conference, followed by Anderson and Wingate in the top three. Catawba and Carson-Newman are picked fourth, with both sides picking up 86 points and two votes to win the conference.
Tusculum is picked sixth, Lincoln Memorial seventh and Mars Hill eighth. Newcomers Queens and Coker have been picked ninth and 10th, respectively. Brevard follows Newberry with a predicted finish of 12th.
Newberry is slated to open the 2014 season on Saturday at 1 p.m., as the Wolves host Lees-McRae at the Smith Road Complex.
