NINETY SIX — The second-ranked Newberry High School varsity boys’ basketball team called a time-out with 6:13 left in the first half and clinging to a one-point lead at Ninety Six on Friday, 22-21.
The scoreboard at the 4:24 mark showed the Bulldogs had gone on a seven-point run as Ninety Six only saw their deficit fall into single digits several more times during the night but would fall 81-54 to Newberry.
In fact, Newberry went on a 27-to-10 run after that time-out to have a 48-31 advantage at the break.
With the Newberry fans virtually having an entire side of the gym to themselves, their loudest cheer came with 5:09 left in the third quarter when Bennett Wilson’s steal and toss-up to Jaylen Lindsay to dunk it, made the score 59-33. Newberry would lead after the third quarter 68-44.
Notorious Booker came within three points of outscoring six Wildcats combined as he finished with 24 points, including nine points in the fourth quarter.
Trey Miller hit four baskets from behind the arc which aided in his 19 points.
Trey Gary and Lindsay each finished the evening with 10 points.
Dominic Gilmore scored nine points in the first three quarters as Wilson saw six points go in.
Devin Harmon’s three-pointer in the second quarter rounded out the Newberry scoring.
Not a single Bulldog player scored in each of the four quarters.
Newberry who improves to 13-and-three on the season will host Batesburg-Leesville on Tuesday, Mid-Carolina on Friday and will conclude a quadruple header on Saturday against Fairfield Central.
