NEWBERRY — Junior Haylee Lepaio notched the 27th double-double of her career as she tallied 25 points and 15 rebounds in Newberry’s 61-58 home victory over the visiting Brevard Tornados on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves (9-5, 5-5 SAC) fell behind early as Brevard (4-10, 3-7 SAC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, which extended to a seven point advantage with 15:28 remaining in the first period. Lepaio scored five straight points to cut the deficit to one.
On the Wolves’ following possession a layup from senior Tasia Holdorf tied the game at 11-11. Brevard soon found itself with a four-point lead, until a 3-pointer by junior Kaitlynn Pacholke again cut into the Tornados’ lead.
Newberry took its first lead of the afternoon with 6:17 remaining as Lepaio hit back-to-back jumpers to give Newberry a short lived 19-18 lead. Newberry saw its lead dissolve before the final seconds of the opening half as Brevard headed to the locker room with a 27-26 lead over the Wolves.
The Wolves opened the scoring in the second period, but were unable to close in on the Brevard lead until the clock had hit 13:28, when Lepaio again gave Newberry a one-point lead. Redshirt sophomore Emily Perry pushed the Newberry lead to three points, before senior Ellie Gleeson and Lepaio scored on consecutive possessions to give Newberry a 42-35 lead.
The two sides exchanged makes over the next minute, with Newberry leading by eight at the nine-minute mark. A jumper by Taylor Hiatt cut the Newberry lead to six, but was followed by a 3-pointer from Perry to put the Wolves up by nine.
With the lead soon cut to three, neither team was able to execute as the clock ticked under the one minute mark. With 17 seconds remaining a layup from Lepaio gave the Wolves a five-point lead. Four-straight points for Brevard cut the lead to one, before Holdorf hit a pair of free throws with under a second remaining to secure a 61-58 victory for Newberry.
Lepaio led the Wolves with 25 points and 15 rebounds, while Perry was the only other Newberry player in double figures with 10 points. Perry added seven rebounds and two assists to her stat line.
Holdorf and Pacholke each dished out five assists, while Lepaio notched three steals on the defensive end.
Newberry hits the road on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tip in Hartsville against the Coker Cobras.
