PROSPERITY — The Mid-Carolina Middle School girls basketball team lost a hard fought game to the Edgewood Middle School Girls by a score of 22-18. MCMS girls were without seven players, due to participation in the Jr. Beta Club field trip.

The Lady Rebels were down 15-10 at the half and came back to tie the game at 18-18 with 1:21 seconds remaining. Edgewood’s leading scorer made a lay-up on a break-away to take a lead with 43 seconds remaining in the game. The girls basketball team was unable to score and EMS converted on 1/2 free throws to end the game.

Chazity Counts scored three points, had three rebounds and three steals against EMS Thursday evening. Ashlyn Stanley had one assist for the Lady Rebels, while Merical Cromer had one rebound.

Cassi Ruff scored two points for her team, also having one rebound, steal, and assist. The leading scorer for the Rebels Thursday was Nia Hall, with seven points, one rebound, one steal, and two turnovers.

Kadianne Knight had one rebound and assist against EMS, while Brytrisha Mathis came close behind Hall as the leading scorer with six points, three rebounds, and one steal.

The MCMS boys’ basketball team got off to a sluggish start only scoring 13 points in the first half Thursday. The EMS leading scorers scored 11 first half points and their guard/wing scored 7 first half points. In the second half, the MCMS boys’ showed a lot of heart and hustle by outscoring EMS 24-16, according to Coach Zeb Reid.

“If we had another minute left, I believe our guys would have pulled it out,” Reid said. “Games like this are a learning experience. Every minute is valuable when you play. If we played the whole game like we played the last three minutes of the game, it would have been a lop-sided win on our side.”

The leading scorer for the boys was Cade Ruff with 21 points, four steals, two assists, one turnover and eight rebounds. Behind Ruff was Bryce Medlock, scoring six points, with two steals and one turnover.

Seth Schumpert had one turnover for the Rebels Thursday. Jeb Fulmer had three turnovers, one assist, one steal, scoring two points for the Rebels.

Rod Byrd scored four points, and had two steals, one turnover, one block, and one rebound. Collins Remion had one turnover and got one rebound for his team, while Jackson Lominick had one steal Thursday.

Jack Edwards scored four points for the MCMS boys, and had one assist, and two turnovers. Kaleb Boland also had one steal, scoring two points for the Rebels. Myreck Wise had one rebound for the Rebels Thursday.

Reid said the boys team was young, but was showing a lot of improvement and potential at each game.”I am very proud of our teams work ethic. We’ve got some great kids on our team,” Reid said.
