SALUDA — Up 21-20, the Newberry High School varsity Lady Bulldogs went on a 12-1 run in the opening 3:33 of the second half and never trailed again in their 46-45 victory Friday at Saluda High School to open region play.
A 4-0 Newberry run to start the fourth quarter had the visitors up 41-30 with just seven minutes left in the game but the ninth-ranked Lady Tigers went on an 8-1 run in the next 4:10 to cut the lead to four points.
The score would be tied at 42 points apiece with 1:11 left in the game but Tyshira Bates hit her third basket from behind the three-point arc with a minute left in the game.
Ahead 45-44 with 22.4 seconds, Arnasia Boyd missed the front end of a 1-and-1 but after a Saluda miss, Boyd would be called for traveling at the 13.2 mark.
The Lady Tigers missed both opportunities at the free throw line as Kelsey Felks grabbed the rebound, passed it to Boyd who was fouled with 8.8 seconds.
Boyd made the first but missed the second free throw, making the score 46-44.
Saluda cut the lead to a point after going one-for-two at the charity stripe before calling their final time-out with 3.8 seconds.
Bates missed both of her free throws with 2.8 seconds to go as Saluda grabbed the rebound.
After Saluda advanced the ball more East-West than North-South, the official blew the ball dead with 1.1 seconds left on the clock, announced that time should have already run off also, ending the game much to the dismay of the Saluda fans.
Bates led the Newberry team in scoring with 12 points. Felks and Boyd each scored in all four quarters as they finished with 10 and nine points respectively.
Nigeria Davis scored five points, Esha Mathis and Fatima Sims scored four points apiece while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points of Alia Hunter.
After spending nearly a month away from the Scott Gym, the Lady Bulldogs host Abbeville on Tuesday.
