SALISBURY, N.C. — A double-double by junior Haylee Lepaio helped push the Newberry women’s basketball team to a 62-57 victory over the Catawba Lady Indians inside of Goodman Gymnasium on Wednesday.


The Wolves (7-4, 3-4 SAC) saw Catawba (7-4, 5-2 SAC) open the scoring before tallying eight-straight points to take an early six point lead over the home team. Catawba battled back to regain a one-point lead, however Wolves’ junior Zara Pearson hit a jumper off an assist from Lepaio with 12:40 left in the period.


Another short lead for the Lady Indians was answered by netting six-straight points as Pearson capped off the run with a layup to give the Wolves a four point lead under the 10-minute mark.


Newberry continued to push the lead over the Lady Indians with a Pearson 3-pointer seeing the lead reach ten points at the 3:27 mark in the first half. Catawba looked to battle back in the waning seconds of the period, but saw Newberry head to the locker room with a seven point advantage.


Lepaio started the scoring in the second half, followed by a jumper from senior Tasia Holdorf which saw the lead reach 11 points for the second time in the game. The Wolves’ 11 point lead with 18:25 remaining in the game equaled the largest advantage of the game for Newberry.


Catawba cut the Wolves’ lead down to two points at 9:26 in the game, before Lepaio pushed the lead to four and redshirt sophomore Emily Perry added another bucket to the lead to put Newberry up 49-43 on the Lady Indians.


Newberry never saw its lead surpass seven points over the final ten minutes, before Holdorf held the Wolves lead at the free throw line with four straight makes to secure the Wolves’ 62-57 road victory.


Lepaio recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while adding two blocked shots to her final line. Holdorf tallied 12 points and seven rebounds, while Pearson netted 10 points and three assists.


Senior Ellie Gleeson notched three assists and eight points in the Wolves’ victory.


The Wolves outrebounded Catawba 46-36 and notched a 32-20 advantage in scoring within the paint.


Newberry returns home for a 2 p.m. tip against Mars Hill on Saturday inside of Eleazer Arena.
