BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Four Newberry Wolves scored in double digits as the scarlet and gray were defeated 96-75 in exhibition action by the UAB Blazers in Bartow Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The game was Newberry’s third exhibition contest against a Division I school this season and the Wolves will carry an 8-2 overall record into Wednesday’s road game at Catawba.

Demarkus Smith scored 16 points to lead the Wolves, while Brandon Taylor canned four three-pointers for 12 points with six rebounds. Gerald Evans scored 12 points and Dondray Walker netted 10 points.

Newberry hung with the Blazers in the early going, taking a 17-15 lead at the 13:50 mark on a Smith layup. From there UAB went on a 6-0 run and would not trail again. The hosts took a double figure lead for the first time with nine minutes left in the have with a Fahro Alihodzic layup capping a 15-3 run to put UAB up 30-20.

The Wolves trailed by as many as 20 in the half, but a surge including a pair of Taylor triples inside the final minute cut UAB’s halftime lead to 52-41.

Walker drained a trey on the first possession of the second half to put the Wolves back within single digits and a pair of Smith free throws at the 16:49 mark brought Newberry to a 54-48 disadvantage.

A pair of Blazer three-pointers helped the hosts start their way to the win, as UAB outscored Newberry 44-34 in the second half.
