MYRTLE BEACH — Newberry College alumnus Josh McElwee has been promoted to the High-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans by the Texas Rangers organization, making his first appearance back home in the 2014 season Friday night.
This is McElwee’s third stint at Myrtle Beach in the last three seasons. A 20th round draftee in 2012, McElwee is a native of Andrews, less than 60 miles from the Pelicans’ home at TicketReturn.com Field.
McElwee earned a hold, pitching 2.0 innings of perfect relief with three strikeouts in Myrtle Beach’s 10-1 thrashing of Winston-Salem. McElwee was promoted after earning a 2-0 record with six saves with a 4.25 ERA in 25 appearances and 57 strikeouts in 36.0 innings at Low-A Hickory.
Elsewhere in the minors, Casio Grider seems to have found his power swing at Triple-A Albuquerque. He is hitting .286 in five appearances with four hits — all for extra bases. He hit his first Triple-A homerun at Las Vegas’ spacious Cashman Field on July 12. He also has two doubles and a triple for the Isotopes.
In low-A Batavia, Ryan Cranmer is hitting well for the Muckdogs. Cranmer has a .400 average with a double, a homerun and four runs scored with a .500 on-base percentage.
