NEWBERRY — A rough 24 hours fell upon the varsity Newberry High School Lady Bulldogs basketball team as they dropped two games during this time to both Spartanburg and Chapin on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
Newberry, who lost to the Lady Vikings twice last year by at least 25 points in both meetings, never led in their 64-54 defeat.
Spartanburg, who was the 4-A seventh ranked pre-season team never could get a large lead on the pre-season fourth ranked in 2-A Newberry, but stayed ahead just far enough to prevent any substantial Lady Bulldog run on their lead, as they only led at the half by five, 29-24.
Tyshira Bates led the team with 18 points while teammate Kesley Felks also scored in each quarter as she finished with 16 points.
Arnasia Boyd scored 11 points in the final three quarters, Nigeria Davis finished with four, while the Newberry scoring ended with the three points of Esha Mathis and the two points of Fatima Sims.
After a 16-point victory over the Lady Eagles to open their season last month, a seasonal sweep of Chapin is never easy to do as Newberry fell to 2-2 on the season after their 63-42 loss in Lexington county.
While both teams were tied at 12 points apiece after the opening quarter, a 43-18 point run in the next two quarters by Chapin propelled them to the 21-point victory.
Bates, for the fourth time this season, led or was tied for being the top scorer for Newberry as she finished with 12 points, which all came in the first three quarters.
Felks finished with eight points while Sims and Nigeria Davis each scored six points.
Maya Miller scored five points in the final stanza, Boyd and Mathis finished with two points apiece while the Newberry scoring ended with the lone point of Jalial Perry.
Newberry travels to Fairfield Central Thursday before they go to Spartanburg this coming Wednesday.
