NEWBERRY — Head coach Jason Valek and the No. 4 Newberry Wolves picked up the program’s 150th all-time dual victory in just its ninth season of competition with a 41-6 pounding of the Limestone Saints on Saturday.

Newberry (6-0) takes a sweep of the seventh annual Newberry Duals and will take a hot streak into next weekend’s Midwest Classic in Indianapolis.

Jeff Vesta started the dual in typical fashion with a pin just over a minute into the 125 pound match, followed by Travis Laxton moving up a class to 133 pounds and pinning his opponent in the second period.

B.J. Young fought through a tough bout to earn a decision at 141 pounds, which was followed up by a dominating 17-0 technical fall by Seiji Borja at 149 pounds.

Taylor Knapp needed only 34 seconds to pin his at 157 pounds and Kayne Melko had over four minutes of riding time by the end of his 9-0 major decision win at 165 pounds. Cody Brundage suffered a close loss by decision.

Jared Holliday cruised to a technical fall in the first period at 184 pounds before Braden Carter dropped a decision at 197 pounds.

Matt Wade picked up his fourth bonus point win of the day with his third first period pin at heavyweight to close out the victory.

Newberry vs. Alderson

The No. 4 Newberry Wolves changed up the lineup a bit but the results were the same, as Newberry downed Alderson Broaddus, 46-0, in the fourth session of the seventh annual Newberry Duals on Saturday.

Newberry (5-0) started the dual with a pin at 125 pounds from Travis Laxton and cruised to a big lead with major decisions from Nick Lankford at 133 pounds, Dyllan Greene at 141 pounds and Seiji Borja at 149 pounds Taylor Knapp was victorious by forfeit.

Kayne Melko earned a decision at 165 pounds and Tyler Johnson also earned a decision at 174 pounds.

T.J. Cayruth won by major decision before Braden Carter at 197 pounds and Matt Wade at heavyweight pinned their opponents in the first period to earn the Wolves’ second shutout of the day.

Newberry vs. Lake Erie

The No. 4 Newberry Wolves struggled early but rebounded to defeat Lake Erie 23-15 in the second session of the seventh annual Newberry Duals on Saturday.

Newberry (4-0) benefited from a pair of forfeit wins at 125 pounds for Jeff Vesta and 141 pounds for B.J. Young.

At 133 pounds, Brandon Thompson was defeated by major decision before Seiji Borja returned the favor to the Storm at 149 pounds with his own major decision.

The featured match-up of the day went Lake Erie’s way, as No. 2 Zak Vargo earned a 10-3 decision over No. 6 Taylor Knapp at 157 pounds, although the Storm’s reaction cost Lake Erie a team point.

Close decisions went Lake Erie’s way at 165 pounds and 174 pounds before Jared Holliday took a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds The 197 pounds match appeared to be headed to sudden victory before LEC drew within four points with a last second takedown for a win.

Matt Wade won the heavyweight bout by major decision to earn the win and push the Wolves to victory.

Newberry vs. Darton

The No. 4 Newberry Wolves opened the seventh annual Newberry Duals by setting a new program record for points scored and margin of victory with a 58-0 win over Darton.

Newberry (3-0) picked up eight pins and two technical falls, ending the dual in just over half an hour. The Wolves surrendered only two escapes in the entire dual and no offensive points.

All eight pins — eff Vesta at 125 pounds, B.J. Young at 141 pounds, Taylor Knapp at 157 pounds, Blake Ridenour at 165 pounds, Cody Brundage at 174 pounds, Jared Holliday at 184 pounds, Braden Carter at 197 pounds and Matt Wade at heavyweight — came in the first period.

Brandon Thompson was the only wrestler making it to the third period in his 16-0 technical fall at 133 pounds, while Seiji Borja earned a 15-0 technical fall early in the second period at 149 pounds.
