NEWBERRY — After seeing the graduation of two Newberry high varsity basketball players that finished their careers with having scored over 1,000 points apiece last year, fans of the Bulldog boys wondered what the two-time defending AA upper state champions had in store for them for the 2013-14 season.
The contingent that braved the rainy weather Tuesday had plenty to cheer for in the Scott Gym as the boys never trailed in a 101-52 victory over Chapin High.
When Chapin called its first time-out just 33 seconds into the game, Newberry had a 4-0 lead. They outscored the Eagles from the field 11-to-1 in the first quarter for a 25-7 lead.
Chapin’s Tanner Springsten scored 16 of his 29 points in the second quarter as both teams scored 22 points during these eight minutes. Newberry led 47-29 at the break.
No more than four Eagles scored in each quarter as three Chapin players scored a total of seven points in the third stanza.
Newberry, meanwhile, scored 30 points between eight different Bulldogs in the same time frame, an evening high to score in a quarter. Chapin scored 12 of its 16 fourth quarter points from behind the three-point arc.
With Newberry inching its way toward 100 points in the final minutes of play, the Bulldog fans were wondering if they would see their first 100-point game to open a season in at least 12 years.
After a miss by Chapin, Newberry dished the ball to freshman Tyrell Mendenhall whose lay-up with less than five seconds in the game surpassed the 100-point milestone.
Twelve Bulldogs ended the night in the scoring book including seven finishing in double digits.
Notorious Booker scored 14 points in the first three quarters of play. Raquon Davenport and Trey Gary finished with 13 points apiece while Bennett Wilson scored 12.
Mendenhall scored 11 points in his varsity debut while Trey Miller and Dominic Gilmore scored 10 points each. Devin Harmon saw five points go in while Josh Davis and Jaylen Lindsay scored four points apiece. Raydell Davis scored three points while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points of Demarcus Gilmore.
Newberry, which has won 33 straight games inside Newberry County since the 2009-10 season, will host Clinton on Friday.
