NEWBERRY — Despite going 6-of-27 from the free-throw line Tuesday in the Scott Gym, the Newberry High varsity Lady Bulldogs never trailed in a 53-37 victory over Chapin High in its first regular season game of the 2013-14 season.
With the score tied at 12 points apiece after the first quarter, Newberry went on a 15-to-6 second quarter run to take a 27-18 lead into the locker rooms.
While both teams both scored nine points in the third stanza, Newberry insured their victory in the final stanza with a 17-to-9 run.
Tyshira Bates had a game-high 24 points as she was the only Lady Bulldog to score in each of the four quarters.
Nigeria Davis finished with 10 points in the final three quarters of play while Kelsy Felks finished the evening with eight points.
Fatima Sims scored five points, Arnasia Boyd saw four points go in while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points of Maya Miller.
After winning one of their three games against 4-A teams in a pre-season tournament last week in Clover, the Lady Bulldogs improve to 2-2 on the season. They will host Clinton on Friday.
