NEWBERRY — Double digit outings from a trio of Wolves was not enough as the Newberry women’s basketball team fell 76-62 at home to a sharp shooting Coker Cobras side.

Coker (3-0, 1-0 SAC) opened the game with four straight points before the Wolves (2-1, 0-1 SAC) battled back into the game with a six-point run, which was capped off by a fast break layup by junior Haylee Lepaio.

Newberry’s 6-4 lead was short lived as Coker tied the game up a few possessions later. A made free throw by senior Ellie Gleeson with 15:07 left in the first half secured the final lead of the evening for Newberry at 7-6 before Coker’s Hailey Yohn hit her first 3-pointer of the game and the Cobras never looked back.

Yohn’s 3-pointer set the Cobras off on a run that saw Coker jump out to an eight-point lead with 8:42 left in the first period. The Wolves continued to battle, but the Cobras remained at arms length from Newberry as Coker extended its lead to 10 points with a little over two minutes left in the period. A 3-point make from junior Samantha Creed sparked a 7-2 Newberry run before the period expired and Coker headed to the locker room with a 36-31 lead.

The second half started with a Newberry basket as Lepaio capitalized on an assist from Creed, Coker answered the layup with one of its own. The Cobras continued to shoot with a high percentage of success as the game continued, seeing its lead surpass five points on multiple occasions in the first ten minutes of the second half.

Newberry cut the deficit to one-point as Lepaio grabbed an offensive rebound and went back up with a layup to take the score to 57-56 with Coker on top. Lepaio’s layup was the first two points of a three-point play resulting in a 57-57 tie with 6:03 remaining.

The tie was the closest Newberry would get to the Cobras in the final five minutes as Coker’s lead extended to double digits as the game came to a close with a 14-point Coker victory.

Creed led Newberry with 21 points, while Lepaio added 16 and senior Tasia Holdorf reached double digits for the third time this season with a 10 point outing. Lepaio led the Wolves with seven rebounds.

Holdorf grabbed six rebounds, while Gleeson snagged five rebounds. Junior Zara Pearson joined Creed with four assists on the evening, while on the defensive end Lepaio led the Wolves with three steals.

Coker outshot Newberry 50 percent to 40.4 percent. The Cobras finished the evening with a 60 percent clip from beyond the 3-point arc.

Newberry returns to the road on Saturday for a 2 p.m. scheduled tip-off against the Brevard Tornados.
