NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves’ football team has earned the program’s second-ever berth to the NCAA Division II playoffs, the team learned Sunday.

Newberry (9-2) will be the fifth seed in Super Region II and will travel to fourth-seeded Carson-Newman (9-2) for the first round of the playoffs at noon on Nov. 23.

The Wolves are one of three teams from the South Atlantic Conference to qualify for the playoffs, with Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne, who is the top seed.

Other teams in the playoffs from Super Region II are second-seeded UNC Pembroke, third-seeded North Alabama and sixth-seeded Tuskegee.

This is Newberry’s second trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs in football action, as the scarlet and gray qualified as the third seed in 2006. Newberry defeated Albany State in the first round before losing at North Alabama in the second round.

All-time, this is the scarlet and gray’s fifth trip to the postseason. Newberry played in a charity game vs. Geneva (Pa.) in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1931, defeated Appalachian State in the Elks Bowl in 1954 and played Lenoir-Rhyne in the Palmetto Shrine Bowl in 1955.

The Wolves will look to avenge a loss at Carson-Newman two weeks ago, when the Eagles won 52-31 after Newberry fell behind early. This will be the first time Newberry has played the same team twice in a season since the Palmetto Shrine Bowl in 1955.

The game time and ticket prices for Newberry’s first round NCAA Division II playoff game at Carson-Newman on Nov. 23, have officially been released by the Carson-Newman athletic department. Kickoff is set for noon. All seats on the visitors side will be $10 for general admission. Students with a school ID will get tickets for $3. For tickets, call 865-471-3396. Tickets will also be available at the gate on the day of the game.
