NEWBERRY — Following his domination of the 2013 Pembroke Classic, Newberry College senior B.J. Young has been named the National Wrestler of the Week by D2Wrestle.com.

Young, a senior and two-time national runner-up from Jackson, N.J., was the second-seeded wrestler in the event and powered his way to a championship with four bonus point victories.

In his opening match, he only needed one period to earn a 17-1 technical fall over Gardner-Webb’s Ryan Hull. In the quarterfinals, Young earned a 17-6 major decision over Ferrum’s Logan Meister. Young won his semifinal match with a 15-5 major decision over Life’s Dillan Schouw.

Young earned the championship in one of the most highly anticipated matches of the tournament against UNC Pembroke’s Daniel Ownbey. Young came into the tournament ranked seventh nationally, with Ownbey ranked sixth. Ownbey recorded the first takedown of the match before Young flipped the momentum and cruised to a 21-5 win by technical fall.

Young and the Wolves travel to Raleigh, N.C., for the Wolfpack Open on Saturday in their next action.
