No. 5 Wolves open 2013-14 campaign at Citadel Open
CHARLESTON — The No. 5-ranked Newberry Wolves wrestling squad opened up the 2013-14 season at The Citadel Open, with eight Wolves placing in the tournament’s top eight spots in their weight class.
“I was really pleased with our effort today,” said head coach Jason Valek. “It was a tough tournament with a lot of Division I wrestlers. Our freshmen and underclassmen really stepped up and showed me we have a great future. I’m looking forward to a great week of practice and having the older guys join the mix at the Pembroke Open.”
Jared Holliday dominated the 184 pounds bracket to earn the championship. He had three pins in his five wins, including a fall in the championship match.
Virgil Toms was the runner-up in the 133 pounds bracket, while newcomer Trung Duong earned a technical fall in the wrestleback bracket but did not place.
Davis Bagwell finished in third at 157 pounds, earning four wins by pin with three of those coming in the first period of the match.
At 125 pounds, Travis Laxton finished in fourth place, recording three pins and a major decision on the day.
Other standouts in the tournament for Newberry included a top six finish from Kayne Melko at 157 pounds and top eight finishes from Duong, Dennis Flores at 165 pounds and Cody Brundage at 174 pounds.
The Wolves are back in action on Nov. 9 at the Pembroke Classic hosted by UNC Pembroke.
