Newberry golf wraps up their season
CONOVER, N.C. —The Newberry College men’s golf team shot a 318 in Monday’s opening round to sit in a tie for eighth place while the women’s team was in a tie for seventh place for the 2013 Rock Barn Intercollegiate hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne.
The men were tied with Belmont Abbey and were led by two players who shot the same score. Tommy Hurst and John Paul Ferguson both shot a 5-over par 77 in Monday’s round.
Other Newberry scores on the par 72, 7,027-yard course were Layton Truax in a tie for 44th with a 9-over par 81, Zack Sherman in a tie for 51st with an 11-over par 83 in his first collegiate round and Ryan Wilkinson in a tie for 54th with a 12-over par 84. Queens led the tournament with a 7-over par 295 Monday.
The women’s team shot a team score of 320 on the par 71, 5,865-yard course. Junior Korey Coleman led the Wolves’ day one efforts with a 5-over par 76, shooting 38 on both halves of the course.
Eline Askeland is one stroke behind her teammate in a tie for 23rd with a 6-over par 77. Sophia Opitz shot a 12-over par 83, Marianna Monaco shot a 13-over par 84 and Annabelle Dallery shot an 18-over par 89.
Newberry’s 320 put the Wolves in a tie with North Greenville, just two strokes behind Grand Valley State. Lynn University shot a 3-under par 281 to lead following the first round.
