SALISBURY, N.C. — Newberry freshman Marianna Monaco earned medalist honors in just her third collegiate tournament, leading the Wolves to a second place finish at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational on Tuesday.
Newberry finished the event with a score fo 314-317=631 to finish three strokes behind UNC Pembroke in the team race.
Monaco shot a 5-over par (72-77=149) to earn the individual title by two strokes over West Georgia’s Jessica Danford and Catawba’s Leslie Long.
This is the fifth time Newberry has won medalist honors at the Rendleman event since 2006. Franziska Blum (2006 and 2008), Josefine Mensner (2009) and Barbara Castro (2012) are the other Rendleman champions to have worn scarlet and gray.
Monaco’s victory is the first time a Newberry freshman has won a tournament since Maria Luz Besio won Wingate’s Ralph Hargett Invitational in March 2009.
Sophia Opitz finished just one stroke outside of the top 10 in the tournament, tying for 11th with a two-day total of 79-76=156 (+12).
Eline Askeland and Annabelle Dallery tied for 36th in the tournament at 163 (+19) and Korey Coleman tied for 41st at 164 (+20).
The Wolves will wrap up their fall schedule at the Rock Barn Collegiate Invitational in Conover, N.C., on Oct. 28 and Oct. 29.
