BEAVERTON, Ore. — The Newberry women’s basketball has been named a “Team to Watch” by the Women’s Division II Bulletin in the publications 2013-14 preseason fact sheet.
The Wolves are listed among eight teams that reached the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2013, including a Simon Fraser squad that reached the Sweet 16.
Fresh off a 20-10 campaign in 2012-13, which included wins over then-No. 20 Lander and then-No. 14 Limestone, the Wolves return four starters and 10 letter winners from a year ago. Returning for Newberry is senior Ellie Gleeson and a trio of talented juniors in Zara Pearson, Samantha Creed and Haylee Lepaio.
Starting all 30 games for Newberry in 2012-13, Gleeson led the Wolves alongside Pearson with 111 assists on the season. A first-team All-South Atlantic Conference selection, Creed returns after averaging 15.6 points per game and recording 98 assists as she led the Wolves in minutes with 1072.
After receiving multiple honorable mention All-America honors in 2012-13, Lepaio looks to continue her strong play in the post for Newberry. A season ago, Lepaio averaged a conference high 18.1 points per game and finished second in the conference with 9.0 rebounds per game, while recording 38 blocked shots and ten double-doubles.
Junior Tasia Holdorf is Newberry’s top returning scorer off the bench after averaging 6.0 points per game a year ago, while senior Devaneé Taylor returns after averaging 4.4 rebounds per game and 5.9 points per game last season.
Conference rivals Lenoir-Rhyne earned a spot in the Women’s Division II Bulletin’s Preseason Top 25 at No. 23. Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne will tangle twice in the regular season with the first meeting scheduled to take place on January 15, 2014 inside of Eleazer Arena.
The Wolves open the year with an exhibition against High Point on Nov. 9, before opening the regular season at Morris on Nov. 12.
