ROCK HILL — For the third consecutive week, Newberry College kicker/punter Kyle Clark has been named the South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced.
Clark, a sophomore from Beaufort, was a perfect 6-for-6 in extra points in the Wolves’ 42-28 win over Wingate which pushed Newberry to a 5-0 overall record and a 3-0 SAC mark. Newberry is the only team in NCAA Division II’s Super Region Two with a 5-0 mark and one of only 10 teams nationally with is 5-0 with five in-region wins.
Clark made his mark in the punting game, with an average of 47.5 yards per punt including punts of 57 and 54 yards in the fourth quarter while the Wolves led by only seven points. Three of his four punts landed inside the Wingate 20-yard line. The Bulldogs managed only one punt return for minus-3 yards.
Clark’s 40.0 yards per punt average is tied for the conference lead and he has averaged 44.4 yards per punt in conference play to lead the league. Newberry ranks ninth nationally in net punting and second in the nation in punt return defense thanks to Clark’s booming punts.
All three SAC players of the week will be featured in this weekend’s Newberry vs. Tusculum Homecoming contest, as Tusculum quarterback Bo Cordell and defensive back LiRonta Archie earned the other two honors.
Newberry and the Pioneers play at 4 p.m. this Saturday at Newberry’s historic Setzler Field.
