SUMTER — Newcomer Vanessa Ortiz wasted no time making an impact for the Wolves’ women’s tennis team as she won the Women’s Open Singles B Flight of the 2013 USTA/ITA Division II Southeast Regional Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Ortiz, a sophomore, cruised through the opening rounds of the Women’s Open Singles B Flight as she topped Naomi Reyes of King in straight sets, before knocking off Brooke Ingram of Belmont Abbey in the round of a16 in straight sets. Ortiz continued to roll as she toppled North Georgia’s Mathilde Baartvedt in the quarterfinals.
Ortiz dropped her first set of the tournament in the semifinals as she fell behind Hannah Watson of Pfeiffer. Ortiz bounced back by losing only one game in the next two sets against Watson to earn a berth in the tournament finals. Ortiz won the B Flight championship as Flagler’s Kelly Stewart defaulted in the finals.
Newberry senior Susana Aguirre advanced to the round of 32 of the Women’s Open Singles A Flight by defeating Aimee Dorley of Young Harris in the opening round. Aguirre fell in the round of 32 to Carolina Lainez of Lander, before bouncing back with a three-set victory over Elena Preadca of Columbus State in the consolation second round. Aguirre met a familiar opponent in the consolation third round as she went one-on-one with regionally ranked No. 20 Ali Evers of Wingate.
Aguirre moved to 2-0 all-time against Evers, who Aguirre also met in the 2012 SAC Championships before the match was abandoned, as she knocked off her conference foe in three sets. Aguirre’s run ended in the consolation quarterfinals as she fell in straight sets to Zinnia Leamana of Clayton State.
Sophomore Tara Lamers joined Ortiz in the B Flight round of 16 after defeating Limestone’s Jessica Martinez in three sets. Lamers was bounced to the consolation round after falling to Watson in straight sets. The consolation second round saw Lamers fall in two sets to Coker’s Anna Musiyenko.
Another newcomer competed for Newberry in the tournament as freshman Kelly McManus began her collegiate career with a loss in the B Flight round of 32 to Anderson’s Lindsay Gregory. McManus recovered in the first consolation round as she defeated Ariel Svantesson of Limestone in straight sets. McManus’ tournament came to an end with a straight sets defeat at the hands of Mount Olive’s Alejandra Hernandez.
The Wolves sent a pair of doubles teams to the tournament as Aguirre and Ortiz competed in the A Flight, while Lamers and McManus competed in the B Flight.
Seeded No. 8 in the tournament, Aguirre and Ortiz topped Manon Janin and Julia Moreira of Limestone in the round of 32. The round of 16 saw the duo escape with a narrow victory over Fran Regel and Margot Simon of USC Aiken.
Aguirre and Ortiz continued to cruise as they toppled Diana DiMarco and Aimee Dorley of Young Harris in the quarterfinals, before falling to top seeded Paola Cigui and Beatriz Leon of Columbus State in the semifinals.
Lamers and McManus fell in the opening round of the B Flight to Anika Cohen and Madeline Wilburn of Flagler.
