ROCK HILL — Newberry College senior setter Chelsea Mayor has been honored as the South Atlantic Conference Specialist of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Mayor, a native of Sugar Land, Texas, ran the Wolves’ offense well on the way to a 2-1 week with key regional wins over Lander and Carson-Newman.
She averaged 10.63 assists and 3.0 digs per set last week, including a career-high 52 assists to go with 17 digs in the win at Lander. Mayor had 46 assists and nine digs in the 3-2 comeback win over Carson-Newman and had a double-double of 40 assists and 13 digs against Lincoln Memorial.
Mayor’s season average of 8.86 assists per set ranks third in the conference. She is the second Houston-area setter to win this award for Newberry in the opening three weeks of the season, as sophomore Rachel Moran was the award winner in the first week of the season.
Mayor’s setting also saw Jessica King post an incredible week, as the junior had a .514 hitting percentage with 42 kills and only five attack errors in 13 sets played last week.
