NEWBERRY — The Newberry Academy middle school football team traveled to Greenwood Christian last Thursday for their third game of the season, and came home with a 40-24 loss despite a late rally.

“The first half of tonight’s game was rough,” Coach Eddie Caviness said after the game. “Our bodies were there, but our minds were not in the game at all. We came out flat and Greenwood took advantage of our miscues. I can say I am proud of our guys for not giving up and playing until the end.”

Newberry started the game flat both defensively and offensively. Greenwood Christian’s offense scored on each of its first two possessions, easily putting up two consecutive touchdowns. Greenwood also took advantage of Newberry’s miscues offensively as two interceptions were returned for touchdowns putting Greenwood up 26-0 at the half.

Greenwood tallied two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Starting in the fourth quarter, Newberry Academy bounced back offensively, pounding the ball up the middle on several fullback and tailback dives and counters. Shield Sawyer scored on the first possession, while Daniel Bannister punched in the two-point conversion.

On the next possession offensively, Bannister scored and also made the two-point conversion to make the score 40-16.

Greenwood came out on its next possession and fumbled the snap, which resulted in a turnover as Jimmy Franklin recovered his second fumble for the game.

The Eagles went on the attack and a hand off to Bannister resulted in another touchdown. Sawyer made the two-point conversion resulting in a 40-24 final score.

Newberry Academy travels to Laurens on Friday.

“I hope we learn from our mistakes and build upon our experience as we get prepared to take on Laurens on Friday,” Caviness said. “We will play harder this Friday for Newberry Academy and our fans. I promise you that.”
