NEWBERRY — The Newberry Academy Lady Eagles volleyball team defended their home court Sept. 17 against region foe W.W. King Academy with a 3-1 victory (25-11, 20-25, 25-9, 25-19).

In the first game, Kaitlyn Nobles served for a six-point rally that broke an 8-8 tie. After a sideout, Carman Franklin began a five-point rally as the Lady Eagles pulled away to a victory.

The Lady Knights of W.W. King Academy battled to even the match at a game each with a 25-20 victory. The NA Lady Eagles made a statement in the third game.

The team went on a nine-point run during Emma Lindsay’s service rotation for an early 12-4 advantage. Lindsay, the Newberry Academy setter, fueled her hitters well, distributing 36 assists for the match. Andie Getz led the Lady Eagles with a match high 18 kills and 7 blocks. Harley Johnson and Nobles also posted match double digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively.

The Lady Eagles held a two game advantage going into the fourth game. The game started with King serving first to a 3-0 lead. After a sideout, Harley Johnson served, and the Lady Eagles answered with a seven point run.

The two teams battled, with the Eagles holding the scoring advantage. Coach Travis Gilliam called a timeout during a King five point rally that narrowed NA’s lead to 23-19.

After the timeout, Rachel Franklin ended the Lady Knight’s chance of a comeback with a momentum changing block at the net for the sideout. The Lady Eagles went on to a 25-19 victory. Coach Gilliam called the team effort “probably their best game of the year”.

The Lady Eagles are 2-3 in region play, with seven conference matches remaining. Newberry Academy plays at home on Sept. 23 versus Wardlaw Academy, and Sept. 24 vs. Mead Hall. On Sept. 26, the Lady Eagles travel to play at Laurens Academy. All three matches are against region opponents.
